First Aid Risk Assessments

It is a legal requirement that an appropriate risk assessment is carried out for First Aid provision in the workplace. This can be a very simple proceedure or more complex depending upon the situation. Although the regulations stipulate a minimum of 1 Appointed Person for low risk environments (shops, offices etc.) the regulations also require that first aid personnel be available at all times people are at work. In reality this means a minimum of 2 Appointed Persons to cover for holidays and sickness, and maybe more for shift work and remote sites. The number of qualified (HSE Approved) First Aiders required operates along similar lines.

First Aid Box Considerations
Should you have one large box or various small boxes? Content and quantities will vary with employee numbers and locations. Waterproof dressings must be used if the casualty works as a food/drink handler. Sterile eyewash solution (2 x 500 ml) may be required where the work process presents an increased risk of eye injury and there is no running water available. Face Shields should be available for resuscitation to prevent contamination by casualty's vomit, blood or other body fluids.
